I’m sorry. I’m sorry that we allowed two years to go by before we acted.
I’m sorry that we let them get away with closing the schools — for more than a year in some cases — and forcing you to stare at computer screens for hours at a time, long after they’d learned that you weren’t actually learning anything.
I’m sorry that we let them force you to wear masks long after we knew (and they knew) that the masks were little more than “face decoration.” I’m sorry that you didn’t see your friends’ faces for nearly two years. I’m sorry we allowed it to continue until some of you were so conditioned that you didn’t take the masks off even after the rules were lifted.
But mostly I’m sorry that we forgot the extent of our own power. I’m sorry that we believed we were helpless to fight back against the teachers’ unions and the school boards — in part because they wanted us to believe that. I’m sorry we forgot, even temporarily, that we as parents *are* the school boards.
But no more.
This election is not enough, but it’s a start.
