Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., announced yesterday she will seek re-election in this year’s midterms. “While we have made progress much more needs to be done to improve people’s lives. This election is crucial… nothing less is at stake than our Democracy,” said the Speaker in a video posted on Twitter.
Although she has, multiple times, said she wouldn’t be running again, there’s one thing that Nancy has proved throughout her entire time in office… That she is totally incapable of relinquishing power!
Just for fun, I did a little research, here are a couple of things I found…
On December 12, 2018, Lindsay McPherson, Senior reporter covering House and Senate for Roll Call, wrote:
Nancy Pelosi is doing exactly what she said she wouldn’t in order to secure the votes she needs to be elected speaker — putting an end date on her tenure as the top House Democratic leader.
Under an agreement reached with seven Democrats who opposed her speaker bid, Pelosi will back term limits for the top three Democratic leaders. The limit she has agreed to will prevent her from serving as speaker beyond another four years. – “This proposal, which was developed by Members who care about the institution of the House of Representatives, would provide that Members in senior leadership positions can serve 3 terms with an additional term with two-thirds support of the Caucus,” Pelosi said in a statement. “It would include the two terms of the Democratic Majority from 2007 to 2011.” – The proposal will be brought before the Democratic Caucus for a discussion and a vote by Feb. 15, the California Democrat said. “I am comfortable with the proposal and it is my intention to abide by it whether it passes or not,” Pelosi said.
She made a deal with people in her party (that didn’t want her!!), that it was ok to vote for her because she promised she would step down after her 2020 term.
So what happened when she was elected again in 2020 and was reminded that she vowed to make this her last term? This is what she said, “There was a move to put limits on the leadership and the chairs of committees. They said they were going to do it but they didn’t do it… But what I said then was whether it passes or not, I will abide by those limits.”
Maybe she thought 2022 would never get here? Or maybe she never had any intention to keep her word… Wonder what it could be?
