New York City allows non-citizens to vote in local elections

Posted by katiefitzpatrick on December 10, 2021 in National News | Leave a response

The city granted 800,000 noncitizens the right to vote in the upcoming elections

Chris Arps is the president of Americans for Citizen Voting and spoke to The New York Times about the organization’s opposition to allowing this to happen. He explained that this initiative is not only happening in New York but in states all around the country. His organization is set out to explain why it is important to be a citizen and have the right to vote in this country as a citizen.

From the New York Times article:

“Americans for Citizen Voting, an organization that was founded in 2019 to oppose efforts to allow noncitizens to vote, sent a letter to the New York City Council this week urging council members to reject the bill.“

We felt we needed to get involved because this is a growing movement across the country,” said the organization’s president, Christopher Arps. “We are not against immigrants — we believe immigrants have built this country. We just feel people should become citizens before they’re allowed to vote.”
