Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson has faced several days of questions, and in that time, Democrats have done their level best to convince the world that no one treats nominees worse than Republicans do.
Granted, none of the Republicans who have questioned Jackson have used any of their allotted time to comment on the fact that their clothing is color-coordinated — that honor goes to Democratic Hawaii Senator Mazie Hirono. But none of them have ambushed her with an uncorroborated sexual assault allegation or accused her of being a gang-rapist either — and none have suggested that she might allow her religious views, whatever they may be, to influence her decisions once on the Court.
Instead, they have asked pointed questions about her record — particularly with her regard to child pornography cases and her routine use of judicial discretion to impose sentences that were less severe than the guidelines and prosecutors’ recommendations.
They have asked about her opinions on Critical Race Theory — because she sits on the board of a school that promotes it.
They have asked about when life begins and whether a fetus can feel pain because even if the current case before the court — which Jackson will not hear — results in Roe v. Wade being overturned, it will certainly not be the last time a case pertaining to abortion reaches the high court.
The confirmation battle is not over yet – and the reality is that the Democrats probably do have the votes to confirm her. But it’s already clear that, aside from a few questions about her record that might make Judge Jackson uncomfortable, Republicans are not playing dirty.
