The renewed calls to ban the AR-15 in the wake of the school shooting in Uvalde (or calls to ban “assault weapons” in general) are just as ineffective as calls to allow abortion in the case of rape — and for the same reasons.
In both cases, the calls are sparked by a tragedy — either a mass shooting or a rape — and in both cases, the proposed “solution” does nothing to address the actual problem. Banning AR-15s does nothing to punish the shooter in the most recent case or to stop the next mass shooting, just like aborting the product of one rape does nothing to punish the rapist or to stop or even deter the next rape.
In both cases, the only people punished are wholly innocent of the crime in question. On the one hand, legal gun owners are the only ones who bear the brunt of increased regulations and further infringements of their Second Amendment rights. On the other, the unborn child faces capital punishment for the crime that forced him or her into existence.
So why are these the only solutions Democrats (and some Republicans) propose? Because they are easy, and perhaps more importantly, they are VISIBLE. They are clear — albeit wholly ineffective — steps that lawmakers can take so that the next time tragedy strikes, they can sit back, cross their arms, and say, “When bad things happened, I was one of the people who did something.”
